The People Who Bring It to Life

The Broken Tine is shaped by the people who care for the land, welcome our guests, and bring each gathering to life. Together, we bring craftsmanship, hospitality, creativity, music, food, outdoor expertise, and a deep love for bringing people together.

Meet the People Behind the Broken Tine

Jonathan Archer

Jonathan is a native West Virginian, master craftsman, and the founder of Jon Archer Designs, a custom furniture company based in Austin, Texas. His commissioned work has been shipped across the country, with clients ranging from neighbors to celebrities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Design and Construction Management and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and brings more than 25 years of experience in design, construction, craftsmanship, and problem-solving.

At the Broken Tine, Jonathan’s vision and hands-on creativity can be seen throughout the property—from custom-built spaces and off-grid systems to the stage, gathering areas, and experiences that continue to take shape. He also shares his knowledge through archery, construction, woodworking, solar power, and other outdoor and practical skills. Above all, he loves creating places where people can gather, celebrate, learn, and enjoy the land together.

Amber Shae Hicks

Amber brings a rare blend of country roots, creative vision, and quiet strength to the Broken Tine. She has an instinct for seeing what a space, gathering, or moment could become—and then helping bring it to life with warmth, beauty, and intention. Her influence can be felt in the music, the atmosphere, the flow of an event, the details around the table, and the sense of ease guests feel when they arrive.

She brings refinement without making things feel formal, pairing a love for culture, art, fine food, and well-crafted drinks with the grounded sensibility of someone who is equally at home behind the scenes, in the garden, or working the landscape. One could describe her role as bringing the lace to the leather and the grace to the rugged—softening the edges without taking away the strength and character that make the Broken Tine what it is.

Much of her work happens quietly: organizing, producing, anticipating needs, shaping ideas, and creating the conditions for others to connect and enjoy themselves. Whether she is helping develop music, coordinating a gathering, caring for the land, or creating beauty in an unexpected place, Amber brings light, life, acceptance, and joy to the property. Her presence helps make the Broken Tine feel not simply like a destination, but like a place where people are seen, welcomed, and invited to belong.

"Uncle Mike" Hoagland

Mike is a native of Oklahoma, a retired fine artist, and a lifelong maker with a wide range of creative and practical skills. His work has included sculpture, pen and ink, watercolor, and oil painting, with pieces displayed in homes across the United States. He has also spent much of his adult life living off-grid while raising nine children and caring for a lively menagerie of animals.

At the Broken Tine, “Uncle Mike” brings an artist’s eye, a wealth of lived experience, and the kind of resourcefulness that can only be learned over a lifetime. He contributes to the character of the property through art, craftsmanship, storytelling, hands-on problem-solving, and the many practical skills he is always willing to share. He also offers expertise in ammunition reloading and other outdoor and self-reliance skills.

JD Dennis

JD is a United States Marine with a degree in Criminal Justice and extensive experience in strategy development, threat and risk assessment, crisis response, executive and event security, and the responsible use of force. He is a weapons specialist and experienced combat-marksmanship instructor and range coach, bringing a disciplined, safety-first approach to every training experience.

At the Broken Tine, JD helps create outdoor and range experiences that are professional, practical, and welcoming to guests at every skill level. His expertise includes firearm safety, range coaching, first aid, trauma care, tactical training, and team building. Whether he is leading a structured course or helping support a larger group event, JD brings calm leadership, clear instruction, and a deep commitment to safety and preparedness.
